Do Manchester City have any grounds to win their appeal?

Manchester City face steep legal challenges as they prepare to appeal their conviction for breaching Premier League financial regulations and using “sham contracts” to inflate sponsorship deals by £830m, according to analysis by BBC Sport.

Speaking to BBC Sport, James Severn, a litigation partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper, stated that the club faces “substantial hurdles” to overturn the verdict. Severn emphasized that City cannot simply request a fresh review, but must instead demonstrate a material error of law, principle, or fact, or prove serious procedural unfairness that directly impacted the Independent Commission’s final ruling.

The club maintains its innocence, asserting it holds “irrefutable evidence” proving the judgement contains clear errors. City’s defence centers on argument that payments originated from the United Arab Emirates government as a shareholder of the sponsors, rather than being disguised owner funding.

Main sponsor Etihad Airways also voiced concerns over being denied an independent opportunity to present evidence during the original proceedings. However, legal experts suggest that if key financial records were already evaluated by the initial Commission, proving a material error will be difficult.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire noted that City’s legal team, led by Mark Howard KC, may attempt to challenge the process itself to question the Commission’s fairness. Although Premier League regulations specify appeals should be resolved within 12 weeks, legal analysts anticipate the outcome could take longer given the case’s scale.
