English FA demands FIFA release documents on Infantino’s abandoned World Cup sell-off plan
The English Football Association has called on FIFA president Gianni Infantino to release documents linked to the abandoned plan to sell a stake in the World Cup to private investors. According to Al Jazeera, FA chair Debbie Hewitt wrote to Infantino requesting full disclosure ahead of the FIFA Council’s next meeting on October 15.
The proposal triggered strong opposition across football, with UEFA threatening to boycott FIFA competitions before the plan was withdrawn. Hewitt, who is also a FIFA vice-president and Council member, has additionally requested documents concerning the suspension of a ban imposed on United States striker Folarin Balogun during the World Cup. UEFA has separately sought documents through US courts and said it has lost confidence in Infantino, who intends to seek re-election in March.
