Erik Ten Hag warns Manchester United could be relegated amid Carrick sack pressure
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has warned that the club could face relegation following their continued struggles under Michael Carrick.
United’s crisis deepened on Sunday after a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, extending their winless run to nine matches and leaving them 17th in the Premier League table.
Carrick has come under increasing pressure, with speculation mounting over his future following heavy defeats to Como and Bournemouth.
Speaking on ESPN NL, Ten Hag admitted that relegation was a possibility, pointing to the competitiveness of the Premier League. “In the Premier League it’s certainly possible, because all the teams are simply strong,” he said.
“They’re all strong squads, all good managers. If you end up on the wrong side once and you really get into that vicious circle, then it can become very difficult.”
According to the Evening Standard, Ten Hag, who left United in October 2024, is now sporting director at FC Twente. United face Roma next in the Champions League before hosting Aston Villa.
