Fani-Kayode assumes diplomatic duties in South Africa, pledges stronger relations
Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, has arrived in Johannesburg, pledging to strengthen diplomatic relations and protect Nigerians living in the country.
According to PUNCH, the former aviation minister made the commitment on Sunday after arriving at O. R. Tambo International Airport to begin his diplomatic assignment.
“My primary focus in carrying out the diplomatic mission entrusted to me by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is to rebuild the bridge of friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa, while protecting the interests of Nigerians living in the country,” he said.
Fani-Kayode emphasised that stronger cooperation between both countries would promote economic prosperity, regional stability and African unity.
He also pledged to expand economic and cultural partnerships while addressing challenges affecting Nigerians in South Africa.
The diplomat, who is concurrently accredited to Lesotho and Eswatini, was welcomed by Nigerian community leaders, diplomats and representatives of various organisations.
His appointment comes amid concerns over relations between Nigerians and South Africans.
