The Federal Government is set to rename the Federal Fire Service as the Federal Fire and Rescue Service, Naija News reports.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the plan on Monday in Abuja during the 2026 National Fire Safety Week.

He said the service still operates under a 1963 law, which he described as outdated and unfit for modern needs.

“The number one issue we had was the law,” the minister said.

According to Tunji-Ojo, the proposed law will repeal the Federal Fire Service Act and expand the agency’s role beyond firefighting.

The new mandate will cover emergency medical services, search and rescue, hazardous materials response, disaster management and accident investigation.

The minister said the bill had completed its defence and was expected to go before the Federal Executive Council for consideration on Thursday.

He also lamented that few Nigerians can perform basic resuscitation.
