Flamingos make history as Nigeria win first U-17 Women’s World Cup title
Nigeria’s Flamingos have made history after defeating Japan 2-1 to win the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Saturday.
According to TheCable, the Nigerian youngsters claimed their first-ever title in the competition, becoming the first African nation to lift the trophy since the tournament was established in 2008.
Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 28th minute, finishing a well-worked Nigerian attack to give the Flamingos the advantage before half-time. Japan responded early in the second half, with their captain restoring parity to set up a tense finish at the Stade de Marrakech.
However, Nigeria regained the lead in the 75th minute through Awuwu Bashiru, whose spectacular effort ultimately secured the championship. The victory completes an impressive tournament campaign for the Flamingos, who also overcame Brazil in the semi-finals to reach the final.
The triumph represents a landmark achievement for Nigerian women’s football and African football as a whole.
