Florida bans undocumented immigrants from state universities

Florida’s State University System Board of Governors has approved a rule barring people unlawfully present in the US from enrolling at selective state universities, effective the 2027-2028 academic year.

As reported by The Washington Times, the ban applies specifically to institutions that do not admit all academically qualified applicants.

Governor Ron DeSantis praised the decision, saying it puts “Floridians — and Americans — first,” while Lt. Gov. Jay Collins argued taxpayers shouldn’t subsidize opportunities for those who “broke our laws” to enter the country.

Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Anna Eskamani criticised the move as cruel, saying it would “slam the door” on students who have met every requirement.

Florida joins South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia in enforcing similar restrictions on undocumented students.
