FULL LIST: US places 11 African countries on high-risk travel list
The United States has placed 11 African countries under its highest travel advisory, warning American citizens against visiting due to serious security and health risks.
According to PM News, the US Department of State classified the countries under Level 4, designated “Do Not Travel”, as of October 2026.
The affected countries are:
- Burkina Faso
- Central African Republic
- Chad
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Libya
- Mali
- Niger
- Somalia
- South Sudan
- Sudan
- Uganda
The warnings cite terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, violent crime, civil unrest and health emergencies.
American authorities also warned that limited diplomatic resources could restrict emergency assistance to citizens in some affected countries.
The State Department operates a four-level travel advisory system, ranging from “Exercise Normal Precautions” to “Do Not Travel”.
Officials advised travellers to consult updated country-specific warnings before making travel arrangements.
The designation does not constitute a general travel ban or a global ranking of dangerous countries.
