Google Cloud suffers power outage, disrupts UK banks and online services
A power outage affecting Google Cloud’s London infrastructure has disrupted banking operations and several online services across the United Kingdom.
According to The Punch, the disruption on Tuesday, October 20, affected financial institutions, including Revolut, Lloyds Bank, Halifax and HSBC.
Google confirmed that a “power event” caused problems in its Europe-west2 region, resulting in service errors and intermittent network failures.
Customers reported difficulties accessing banking applications, making card payments, transferring money and withdrawing cash.
Revolut assured customers that their funds and personal information remained secure despite the disruption.
The outage also affected delivery companies, including Royal Mail and DPD, alongside online property platform Rightmove and court video services.
Google apologised to affected users, saying the power-related incident had been mitigated while engineers worked to restore services.
The disruption highlighted growing concerns about businesses’ dependence on major cloud computing providers for essential digital operations and financial transactions across the country.
