Google Pay launches in Nigeria, Visa cardholders can now make digital payments
Visa cardholders in Nigeria can now make fast and secure digital payments using Google Pay following its launch by participating financial institutions.
According to a press release published by TheCable on Wednesday, eligible customers can add their Visa cards to Google Wallet to make contactless payments in stores and complete online transactions.
The service allows Android users to make purchases without carrying physical bank cards.
Google Pay uses tokenisation technology, replacing customers’ card numbers with unique digital tokens to protect sensitive financial information during transactions.
Visa West Africa Vice President Andrew Uaboi described the development as another step towards expanding secure digital payments.
Google West Africa Country Director Olumide Balogun also welcomed the launch.
“We are delighted to bring Google Wallet to Nigeria, a market at the forefront of financial innovation in Africa.”
The companies said the partnership would strengthen financial inclusion, encourage contactless transactions and support Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
