Restaurant shut down after newborn rat found in customer’s food
A Hong Kong health authority is investigating after a customer found a newborn, hairless rat squirming inside her takeaway meal from Wa Jer Restaurant.
New York Post reports that the woman ordered a $5.40 beef rice noodle meal on Monday and discovered the pink, alien-like creature wriggling in her satay sauce. She filed a complaint with the local Food and Environmental Hygiene Department after the video went viral online.
Officials seized the food for testing and found the restaurant’s hygiene conditions unsatisfactory. A spokesperson said it was too early to determine how the rat got into the food.
The restaurant’s operator said he was shocked, adding the shop undergoes monthly deep cleaning. It shut down Tuesday for disinfection.
