Human-robot cage fights declared ‘illegal’…

California regulators have ordered a company that stages human-versus-robot fights to stop promoting such bouts, but it is still advertising a San Francisco event this week, Yahoo News reports via USA TODAY.

The California Department of Public Affairs and the State Athletic Commission issued the Sept. 30 order to Robot Entertainment Kombat after its Sept. 18 fight between a 6-foot “Terminator” robot and influencer Frankie LaPenna. LaPenna won two of three bouts.

The letter ordered recipients to cease “holding, promoting or advertising any boxing or mixed martial arts contest match or exhibition, involving any human in the State of California without the prior approval of the State Athletic Commission.”

The company’s website still lists an “REK Deathmatch” on Oct. 9. It is unclear whether it will involve humans.

California law does not explicitly ban such fights. CEO Cix Liv said: “They said what we are doing is illegal, yet there is no law for it.”
