Hundreds of students in hospital after fresh gas emissions hit Ogun schools

Several students have been hospitalised following fresh emissions of offensive gas odours across secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo and Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.

According to Daily Post, Wednesday’s incident, the fourth recorded this year, affected Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode and Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School.

Affected students were rushed to general hospitals for treatment, while some schools in Ago-Iwoye suspended academic activities, sending pupils home.

The incident sparked panic among parents and teachers, who rushed to hospitals to check on their children.

Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Orensaya, confirmed the incident, assuring residents that authorities were addressing the situation.

The General Manager of the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, Kehinde Bello, attributed the emissions to natural geological and tectonic fault lines rather than pipeline leakage or sabotage.

He advised exposed residents to cover their noses and mouths with wet handkerchiefs.

Similar incidents occurred in April, May and June, prompting previous school closures and hospitalisations.
