Ilhan Omar’s citizenship, marriages and finances offer Feds many avenues to investigate
Rep. Ilhan Omar could face prison time and lose her U.S. citizenship and House seat if federal investigators uncover criminal wrongdoing, legal experts warn, Washington Times reports. Federal agents on Monday raided her home in the District of Columbia, seizing her cellphone, laptop computer, notebooks and passport. No criminal charges have been filed.
The probe reportedly centers on how Omar obtained citizenship, including her date of birth listed on her father’s 2000 naturalization paperwork, as well as allegations of a sham marriage and falsified congressional financial disclosures. Omar has denied wrongdoing, saying she is the victim of “baseless lies and smear campaigns” by President Trump, who said he was not involved in ordering the raid.
Federal agents have issued over a dozen grand jury subpoenas, including relatives, a source said. Matt O’Brien, a former immigration judge, said the case appears to be both a criminal investigation and a civil denaturalization inquiry. Prosecutor Jeanine Pirro said several probes are underway.
