Iran threatens to cripple neighbouring airports if Iranian flights are halted

Iran has warned neighbouring countries against cooperating with the United States to halt Iranian flights, threatening to make their airports inoperable if they comply.

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, issued the warning during an interview with state television according to Reuters.

Rezaei said Tehran would act against airports in neighbouring countries if they participated in efforts to prevent Iranian aircraft from operating.

The warning followed comments by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said on Monday that Iranian airlines would be forced to stop operating from September 23 through the threat of secondary sanctions against air service providers.

The measure comes seven months into the war between the United States and Iran, amid heightened regional tensions.
