Jack Smith accuses Trump of committing ‘serious crimes against the nation’ in Senate testimony

Former US special counsel Jack Smith has defended his decision to prosecute President Donald Trump, saying his investigations found evidence of criminal conduct.

According to Mediaite, Smith appeared Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee to discuss investigations into Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and classified documents.

“I stand by my decisions as special counsel, including my decision to bring charges against President Trump,” Smith said.

He added: “Our investigation developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in serious crimes against our nation.”

Smith said the charges resulted from evidence and maintained he would make the same decision regardless of whether a former president was Republican or Democrat.

He also alleged Trump illegally retained classified documents after leaving office and attempted to obstruct justice.

Republican lawmakers criticised Smith’s investigative methods, including obtaining lawmakers’ communications records. Smith said he remains “confident that the rule of law will endure because so many continue to uphold it faithfully.”
