Jay-Z’s Roc Nation moves into gospel music…
Jay-Z’s entertainment company, Roc Nation, has officially expanded into gospel and inspirational music by signing distribution deals with prominent gospel legends
Gospel music legends Marvin Sapp and Hezekiah Walker have secured distribution agreements with Roc Nation, the entertainment company founded by hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, signaling a major move by mainstream entertainment into the booming Christian music sector.
According to Christianity Today, the partnerships coincide with rapid genre growth, as analytics firm Luminate reported an 8.9% increase in Christian and gospel music listenership in 2024. Unlike traditional recording contracts that retain rights to artists’ masters, distribution models offer musicians greater autonomy and financial ownership. Walker noted the partnership provided an “opportunity to put gospel music in the ear of those who wouldn’t normally hear it.”
However, the deals have sparked online criticism among gospel listeners who question Jay-Z’s secular beliefs and lyrics. Addressing concerns, Sapp—whose 17th album Restoration releases on November 20—urged fans to avoid judgment. “Not everyone has the same assignments and the same gifts. Rather than judging the decisions, why not pray that God keeps us from evil?” he remarked.
Scholars emphasize that crossover partnerships are deeply rooted in gospel history. Music professor Donté Ford noted, “Gospel music was born out of a marriage between the sacred and secular.”
