JJ Gabriel’s dad revealed as former Arsenal player with big influence on Man Utd wonderkid
Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel’s father, Joe O’Cearuill, is a former professional footballer whose own career has given him a strong understanding of the game and a significant influence over his son’s development. As reported by The Sun, O’Cearuill briefly spent time on Arsenal’s books before going on to play for Brighton during a journeyman career.
He also represented the Republic of Ireland twice, making both appearances during a post-season tour of the United States in 2007. Since his son emerged as one of Manchester United’s brightest academy prospects, O’Cearuill has taken an active interest in his career and has frequently spoken about Gabriel’s potential.
The teenager, who turns 16 next month, enjoyed a remarkable campaign last season, scoring 26 goals in 26 matches and winning United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award. Gabriel has continued to attract attention after scoring a hat-trick for United’s Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League.
His father has also defended his son publicly when comparisons with other young players have been made, highlighting the close involvement he has in Gabriel’s football journey.
