Kai Rooney scores for Manchester United Youth despite U21 debut defeat
Teenage forward Kai Rooney bounced back from a difficult Under-21s debut by scoring for Manchester United’s U18s side over the weekend. According to the Manchester Evening News, the 16-year-old son of club legend Wayne Rooney made his U21s debut on Friday as a late substitute against Nottingham Forest, coming on in the 78th minute of an eventual 3-2 defeat.
However, the youngster responded immediately on Saturday by starting for the U18s against Forest and opening the scoring in a 1-1 draw. Taking to social media afterwards, Rooney shared a photo of his goal celebration alongside a simple four-word caption: “back on the scoresheet.”
The busy spell marks significant progress for the academy prospect, who also made his UEFA Youth League U19s debut earlier this month after signing a two-year scholarship deal with the Red Devils in July.
