Lionel Messi becomes first to win back-to-back MLS Golden Boot awards
Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has become the first player in Major League Soccer history to win back-to-back Golden Boot awards, according to GOAL.
The 39-year-old finished the 2026 regular season with a league-high 26 goals in 31 appearances, finishing four goals clear of FC Dallas forward Petar Musa.
Messi also registered 17 assists, leading the league with 43 total goal contributions while helping Inter Miami secure second place in the Eastern Conference.
Inter Miami head coach Kily Gonzalez voiced strong support for Messi to add a third MVP title to his accolade collection.
”I have no doubt that he’s the best of all,” Gonzalez said. “None of them can compare to him when it comes to respect for his colleagues. Leo at his age and what he does, from my point of view, deserves the MVP and also the Ballon d’Or,” Gonzalez added.
“I hope he can achieve it.”
Inter Miami now advance to face Columbus Crew in the first round of the MLS playoffs.
