Mahmoud Abbas barred from UN Assembly as US denies visa again

The United States has again denied Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas a visa to attend next week’s United Nations General Assembly in New York, extending restrictions on Palestinian officials.

According to France 24, the decision marks the second consecutive year Abbas has been prevented from attending the gathering in person. Washington also extended visa restrictions targeting members of the Palestine Liberation Organization and officials of the Palestinian Authority.

The US State Department said the measures followed what it described as failures by Palestinian leaders to meet commitments under American law, citing actions at international courts and efforts to secure unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood.

Palestinian diplomats accredited to the United Nations are expected to remain able to participate in the meetings. Abbas addressed last year’s General Assembly virtually after being denied entry.

The latest decision comes days before world leaders gather in New York for the UN’s 81st General Assembly session.
