MAMDANI BANNING AI IN SCHOOLS
New York City Public Schools is imposing a one-year moratorium on generative AI use for students in Pre-K through eighth grade, affecting over half a million students.
As reported by THV11, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels announced the sweeping guidelines on Wednesday, alongside new screentime limits, including a ban on individual screens before third grade.
Mamdani said children need “human connection” to learn, pushing back against the notion that AI in early education is inevitable.
However, exceptions apply for students with disabilities, multilingual learners and career-readiness programs, while the city will also ban companion chatbots for mental health support across all grades.
