Man City eliminate Brighton on penalties after Etihad thriller
Manchester City reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after beating Brighton 5-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
According to Hayters, Brighton took the lead in the 30th minute through Malick Yalcouyé, who finished after being set up by Georginio Rutter. City responded before the break as Mateo Kovačić found the bottom corner from Phil Foden’s pass to restore parity.
Brighton regained the advantage just two minutes into the second half, with Rutter finding the net in the 47th minute to put Fabian Hürzeler’s side ahead again. However, City fought back in the 72nd minute when Rayan Cherki’s free-kick took a deflection off Vitor Reis and beat the Brighton goalkeeper.
Neither team managed to score a decisive goal before the final whistle, forcing the contest into a penalty shootout. City converted four of their five spot-kicks, while goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli produced two crucial saves to deny Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk, securing the hosts’ passage into the last eight.
