Mikel Arteta backs goal-shy Viktor Gyökeres ahead of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup tie
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has publicly backed striker Viktor Gyökeres despite his ongoing goal drought, insisting that the Swedish international’s clinical edge will soon return, according to GOAL.
Gyökeres has struggled for goals in the final third this season, remaining goalless after another frustrating outing during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Everton.
Defending the forward ahead of Tuesday’s Carabao Cup trip to Fleetwood Town, Arteta remarked: “He was unlucky two or three moments. He’s in front of goal, he’s won the position to both centre-backs and the ball doesn’t get there.”
With a crucial Premier League clash against Liverpool on the horizon, Arteta is expected to rotate his squad against Fleetwood Town.
However, the Spaniard warned his players against complacency, emphasizing: “Show them the Arsenal shirt and what we represent and that’s it. We need to go there and win the game.”
