Musk directed Starlink slowdown that left Ukraine blindsided

Share:

Billionaire businessman Elon Musk has reportedly ordered restrictions on a military-grade version of Starlink used by Ukraine, disrupting some drone operations amid tensions over attacks on Russian oil facilities.

According to Wall Street Journal, citing US officials and individuals familiar with the matter, Musk directed the slowdown last week, causing concern in Kyiv and confusion within President Donald Trump’s administration.

The restrictions reportedly limit the speeds at which Ukrainian military equipment can remain connected to the satellite network.

Consequently, some Ukrainian offensive and interceptor drones have become virtually ineffective, potentially affecting military operations.

The reported decision follows criticism from Musk and Trump over Ukraine’s recent strikes on Russian diesel refineries.

Trump has blamed the attacks for contributing to rising energy prices.

The development raises concerns about Ukraine’s dependence on privately operated satellite communications for military operations.

The report did not indicate how long the restrictions would remain in place or whether Ukrainian authorities had secured alternative communication arrangements for affected military systems.
