NASS sends 1999 Constitution amendment bills to all 36 states for consideration

The National Assembly has transmitted the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration, according to Tribune Online.

Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, confirmed the transmission Wednesday, saying it covers 12 thematic areas including electoral reforms, judicial reforms, security, devolution of powers and fiscal reforms. Under Section 9 of the Constitution, the bill requires approval by at least two-thirds of state assemblies.

Ogunlana said states are expected to communicate resolutions within 30 days, though this is an administrative timeframe rather than a constitutional deadline. He said the National Assembly would proceed with further steps upon receiving state responses.
