National Assembly moves to translate laws into local languages

The National Assembly has announced plans to translate Nigerian laws into Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba and other local languages as part of efforts to widen public access to legislative information.

According to PUNCH, Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library Trust Fund, Henry Nwawuba, disclosed the initiative during the 2026 National Assembly Library Week in Abuja.

Nwawuba said the library is expanding its digital infrastructure, including electronic repositories, an upgraded e-library, a mobile application and a Bills Tracker that will allow Nigerians to monitor legislation.

He said infographics, audiovisual materials and video explainers would also be developed to simplify bills, Acts and legislative procedures.

Nwawuba said translating laws into local languages would help more Nigerians understand legislation affecting their daily lives.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also urged lawmakers to utilise the library amid growing misinformation and artificial intelligence, while stressing its importance to evidence-based legislative decision-making and preservation of authoritative parliamentary records for future generations across Nigeria and improve public participation.
