NFF President Gusau, board resign amid DSS probe of N17bn fund

Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Gusau and board members have resigned following intense pressure over poor football management, the historic failure of the Super Falcons to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since 1991, and a DSS investigation into a N17 billion Federal Government intervention fund.

As reported by Vanguard, the Department of State Services joined other security operatives in probing the NFF’s utilisation of the N17 billion approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024 to clear outstanding payments owed to national teams. Eight of the 13 board members had allegedly already quit before Gusau’s resignation.

The Super Falcons’ elimination came after a 1-0 loss to Cameroon at WAFCON and a subsequent 2-1 playoff defeat to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana. The Super Eagles have also missed consecutive FIFA World Cups.

The mass resignation could affect the September 27 NFF elections scheduled for Lafia, Nasarawa.
