A United States federal court has sentenced Texas-based Nigerian businessman Edikan Adiakpan to 30 months in prison for laundering proceeds from internet fraud through his company’s accounts.

According to Peoples Gazette, Adiakpan, 35, founder of Houston-based luxury transportation company Akama Lifestyle, was sentenced on Thursday by District Judge Andrew Hanen.

The court also ordered three years of supervised release following his imprisonment.

The US Department of Justice said Adiakpan operated as a money mule between 2020 and 2022, transferring funds for fraudsters while retaining commissions.

Investigators established that the money originated from business email compromise schemes targeting more than 10 victims.

Authorities discovered that Adiakpan deposited and redeemed cashier’s checks containing $359,000 belonging to fraud victims.

The funds were payable to him and his luxury car company.

Another Nigerian, Ayobami Omoniyi, 27, who participated in the fraudulent scheme, had earlier received a 32-month prison sentence on March 24.
