CBN Unveils New Framework To Combat Terrorism Financing In Banks

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Wednesday rolled out a stronger supervisory framework aimed at deterring the use of Nigerian banks and financial institutions for terrorism financing and other abuses.

In a statement, the apex bank’s Acting Director, Corporate Communications/Investor Relations Department, Hakama Sidi-Ali, said the CBN has made terrorism financing supervision one of its current priorities.


Shake Up As Nigerian Army Appoints New Commanders, Redeploys Senior Officers

The Nigerian Army has approved a major realignment of its senior command structure, involving the redeployment of generals across frontline operations, formations, training institutions and strategic departments.

The approvals were given by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, according to a statement on Wednesday by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele. A new commander was also appointed to lead the military’s campaign against insurgents in the North-East.

Anele said the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to enhance operational effectiveness, strengthen leadership and align the Service’s command structure with Nigeria’s evolving security environment, prioritising critical operational theatres and strategic appointments.


Atiku Says FAAC ‘Boom’ Is Monetary Illusion, Accuses FG Of Dressing Up Decline

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the Federal Government of dressing economic decline in bigger naira figures, declaring that the much-celebrated FAAC “boom” is a monetary illusion.

Atiku said the figures collapse once tested against currency depreciation, inflation, purchasing power and the mounting liabilities of state governments, warning Nigerians not to be deceived by the spectacle of trillions being announced every month.


Police Give Updates, Make Arrests After Peter Obi Convoy Blockade In Benue

The Benue State Police Command has arrested 46 persons in connection with the obstruction of the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to the state on Tuesday.

The Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, disclosed this on Wednesday at a press conference in Makurdi, saying the arrests followed intelligence-led operations launched immediately after the incident.

Nwadiogbu also defended the officers present during the attack, saying they acted professionally and tactically to avoid an escalation that could have caused loss of life and property damage. He said their restraint should not be mistaken for inaction, noting that Obi was later safely escorted to the airport.


24 Feared Dead After Consuming Herbal Substance In Ondo Community

The Ondo State Government on Wednesday confirmed the deaths of 24 residents of Odigbo Local Government Area following the consumption of a herbal liquid substance.

It was gathered that no fewer than 24 residents of two communities in the council area, Araromi Obu and Odigbo town, reportedly lost their lives after consuming the substance.


FG Begins Overhaul Of Accreditation System For Tertiary Institutions

The Federal Government has begun an overhaul of the accreditation system for tertiary institutions, with the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, warning institutions against presenting borrowed staff, equipment and facilities during accreditation exercises.

The minister said officials of tertiary institutions who fail to comply with admission and accreditation requirements risk losing their jobs, while private institutions that violate regulatory standards could lose their operating licences.


Tinubu Took Political Risk By Removing Fuel Subsidy — Dele Alake

The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, has said President Bola Tinubu took the political risk of removing the fuel subsidy in the interest of Nigeria’s long-term economic recovery, despite the immediate hardship and backlash that followed.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Alake said previous administrations had identified the need to remove the subsidy but repeatedly deferred the decision over concerns about elections and its political consequences.


Osun Police Arrest Man For Allegedly Killing Mother, Burying Her In Shallow Grave

The Osun State Police Command on Wednesday said it had arrested one Taye Kasali, of Bose Osi, Osun State, in connection with the alleged murder of his mother, Kudirat Kasali.

After allegedly perpetrating the act, Kasali reportedly buried the remains of the deceased in a shallow grave within the family farm.


Police Arrest Woman Over Forged Document Alleging OPay Shutdown

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Hafsat Abubakar, over the creation and circulation of a forged document falsely suggesting that fintech company OPay Nigeria Limited was shutting down its operations.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Iniedu, disclosed this during a press briefing at the NPF-NCCC in Abuja on Wednesday.


Anambra Police Arrest 12 Over Killing Of Comedian “Aiza Nwosu,” Other Cult Killings

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 12 persons in connection with the killing of a popular comedian and town crier, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Aiza Nwosu,” as well as other cult-related killings in Awka, the state capital.

The command, however, denied allegations that its officers collected N600,000 to secure the release of Miss Nwosu Chikamso Jennifer, said to be a sister of one of the suspects.

Akpabio Breaks Silence On Viral Claim Northerners Will Suffer If Tinubu Loses 2027 Election

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed claims that he said Northerners would suffer if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 election.

Naija News reports that the lawmaker made the clarification in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, titled “Desperate and Dangerous Lie: Produce the Evidence or Withdraw It.”

Akpabio described the claim as a complete fabrication and challenged the alleged sponsor of the material, Engr. Ibrahim Umar Ammar, to provide evidence backing it, arguing there was no video, audio recording, speech, interview, press release, transcript or credible news report of the alleged remark. He described a photograph bearing the alleged quotation as “an allegation wearing typography.”


FG Releases Eight-Month Allowance For Varsity, Poly Lecturers

The Federal Government has released funds to pay the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) to academic staff of federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education for January to August 2026.

Naija News reports that the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the development on Wednesday shortly after inaugurating the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation, saying the payment was released under the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

CATA is designed to help academic staff purchase materials and tools needed for teaching, research, and other academic responsibilities. The minister said affected institutions should have received notification of the release and were expected to commence payments.


2027: Atiku Fires Back At Calls For EFCC Probe

The 2027 African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has slammed those demanding that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) probe him over corruption allegations.

Naija News recalls that a former National Vice Chairman (South-South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ntufam Hilliard Eta, had called on the EFCC and other law enforcement agencies to probe and prosecute Atiku over the allegations.

Reacting in a statement by his media aide, Paul Ibe, the former vice president described the calls as a mere political witch-hunt, saying: “When an incumbent government begins to feel politically threatened, the institutions of state suddenly become intensely interested in its opponents. The latest episode is the move to bring former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, under the scrutiny of the EFCC.”

Atiku also recalled that the Olusegun Obasanjo administration investigated him but found no evidence to pursue his prosecution.
