Nigerian online retailers losing $200,000 a year as diaspora shoppers flee checkout over shipping bills
$700 to ship a dress: How crushing shipping costs are killing Nigerian e-commerce’s diaspora market
Nigerian e-commerce businesses are haemorrhaging diaspora revenue at checkout, with international shipping charges reaching as high as $700 per single item — far exceeding the value of the goods themselves — forcing potential customers abroad to abandon their carts before completing payment, The Guardian Nigeria reported.
The model quickly becomes uneconomical for items such as dresses and shoes, creating what is described as a “checkout leak” for Nigerian e-commerce businesses seeking to sell to customers in the diaspora.
A 2026 survey by Nigerian logistics technology company Shipbubble identified the root cause as the individualised shipment model, where each package independently bears the full weight of courier and customs handling costs. The company estimates the problem costs small Nigerian e-commerce businesses between $150,000 and $200,000 annually in lost sales — a significant blow to businesses that view diaspora spending as a critical foreign-currency lifeline.
