Nine-month arrears: Lagos varsity workers declare indefinite strike
Academic and non-academic workers in Lagos State-owned universities have threatened an immediate, indefinite strike over the alleged failure of the state government to implement agreements reached with their unions.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT, issued the warning on Friday, saying the action would affect LASU, LASUCOM, LASUSTECH and LASUED.
According to Daily Post, JAC Chairman, Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, said the unions had exhausted dialogue after September salaries were paid without agreed allowance adjustments and outstanding arrears.
He said the arrears had accumulated to nine months, covering January to September 2026, while the unions are demanding implementation of the signed 2026 Federal Government-unions agreement and a 15 per cent “Lagos Factor” allowance.
“We have demonstrated unprecedented patience, maturity and commitment to peaceful dialogue. However, our patience has been pushed to the absolute limit. We have exhausted every possible administrative channel to avert this crisis,” Bakare stated.
The unions also demanded payment of outstanding benefits and fulfilment of previous government commitments, including a 20 per cent salary increase and five Marcopolo buses.
