NLC pushes for N500,000 minimum wage as negotiations with FG resume
The Nigeria Labour Congress has announced it will soon reopen minimum wage negotiations with the Federal Government, demanding a new national minimum wage of at least N500,000 — more than seven times the current N70,000 — citing rising inflation and the rapidly deteriorating purchasing power of Nigerian workers.
NLC President Joe Ajaero, represented at the Rights of Workers Summit in Birnin Kebbi by Deputy President Audu Amba, said: “Anything less than N500,000 cannot cater for workers. The current minimum wage is due for review.”
Tribune reports that the Trade Union Congress similarly described the N70,000 wage as inadequate, while the Network of Abuja Left Groups urged Nigerians to support organised labour ahead of an August 11 deadline.
