NLC, TUC threaten nationwide action as talks with FG end in deadlock
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have threatened nationwide action after negotiations with the Federal Government over economic hardship and workers’ welfare ended in a deadlock.
According to Vanguard, the unions gave the government until October 27 to address their demands following an inconclusive meeting in Abuja on Thursday.
Their demands include reducing petrol prices to 2024 levels, renegotiating the minimum wage, implementing tax relief measures and resolving outstanding workers’ allowances.
In a joint statement, the unions criticised the government’s preparedness.
“Regrettably, the government delegation came unprepared and without the necessary mandates to engage substantively on these issues. No concrete commitments were secured, and the outstanding issues remain unresolved.”
The unions directed affiliates and state councils to prepare for possible nationwide action if negotiations fail.
They maintained their commitment to dialogue while warning against further delays.
Another meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, when both parties are expected to revisit the outstanding demands.
