The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has deployed Abdulhamid Kabara as its new Niger State Commandant following the suspension of his predecessor over the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in custody.

According to Channels Television, Kabara replaced Suberu Aniviye, who was suspended by the Ministry of Interior following the incident.

Kabara expressed sadness over the deaths and sympathised with the victims’ families, stressing that the sanctity of human life must remain paramount during law enforcement operations.

He said the corps would continue combating illegal mining while protecting the dignity, safety and welfare of detainees.

The development follows President Bola Tinubu’s order for a transparent investigation into the deaths.

Twenty NSCDC officers have also been suspended while an independent committee investigates the incident.
