Obasanjo: I wish Charlie Boy took after his father

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said he wished Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charlie Boy, had resembled his late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, whom he described as a great man.

Obasanjo made the remarks during an interview with media personality Bae U, published on Saturday, according to Punch. He recalled that he initially had little regard for Charlie Boy because of the entertainer’s unconventional public persona.

However, the former president said his perception changed after he discovered that Charlie Boy was caring for his father at home. He also praised the entertainer for taking care of his mother, describing the gesture as a sign of good character.

Obasanjo further disclosed that Charlie Boy later explained to him that the unconventional persona was part of his means of making a living. The former president said the explanation was evidence of the entertainer’s intelligence.

The interview, which was published on Saturday, offered Obasanjo the opportunity to speak on his changed view of the entertainer and the role Justice Oputa’s care played in shaping it.

Obasanjo’s remarks came as he reflected on how his early impressions of Charlie Boy gave way to a more favourable opinion over time.
