O’Keefe faces felony charges after posing as Islamic voter…
American conservative activist James O’Keefe and content creator Cam Higby have been charged with felonies following a controversial voting stunt at a polling station in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
According to The New York Times, prosecutors filed charges on Wednesday, October 28, accusing both men of unlawful voting and identity theft after they allegedly impersonated registered voters in August.
The pair reportedly wore mock Islamic attire, adopted fake Arab accents and attempted to expose perceived weaknesses in Minnesota’s voter registration system.
Both offences carry maximum penalties of five years in prison each.
“Free and fair elections are the bedrock of democracy, and their protection is one of our highest priorities,” Hennepin County prosecutor Mary Moriarty said.
Authorities confirmed that no fraudulent votes were cast during the incident.
However, Higby denied wrongdoing, stating, “I never voted, I never signed an affidavit, and I never violated a law.”
The charges come amid growing national debates over election security and voter identification requirements across the United States.
