Ondo: Aiyedatiwa says search continues, visits Igbokoda crash site
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has directed sustained search and recovery efforts at the site of the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Igbokoda, describing the incident as a national tragedy.
According to the Vanguard, Aiyedatiwa visited the crash site on Wednesday with Navy and Air Force personnel, NEMA officials, divers and local volunteers involved in the operation.
The governor described the scene as a “very gory sight”, saying body parts, clothes, jackets and aircraft fragments had been recovered and preserved for investigation.
He said the swampy terrain had complicated access, prompting the deployment of amphibious machines to move boats and equipment closer to the site nearby.
“The terrain is so soft that it appears the aircraft may have sunk deep into the mud, which is why it has not been seen,” Aiyedatiwa said.
He added that jet fuel was leaking into the water, causing pollution, while search teams continued looking for the cockpit and other wreckage.
