A traditional ruler in Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, High Chief Akinwalere Akinola, has been shot dead during the burial rites of a fellow traditional ruler.

According to PUNCH, the incident occurred on Tuesday while traditional rulers and other community members were performing funeral rites for their late colleague.

A community source said a firearm was discharged during the ceremony, with the bullet striking Akinola in the head.

“During the programme, a firearm was discharged. The bullet struck High Chief Akinwalere directly in the head, resulting in his instant death,” the source said.

The shooting reportedly threw the community into confusion, while the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm remained unclear.

Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident and disclosed that a suspect had been taken into custody.

“One suspect arrested. Meanwhile, thorough investigation has commenced,” Jimoh said.
