Petrol hits N1,500/l as marketers warn of possible N2,000 spike

Petrol prices have surged to as high as N1,500 per litre across Kano, Yobe, Sokoto, Borno, Taraba and Zamfara states, triggering sharp increases in transportation fares and deepening economic hardship for ordinary Nigerians — prompting the Nigeria Labour Congress to demand urgent Federal Government intervention.

According to The Punch, NLC President Joe Ajaero warned that petrol was selling for approximately N1,430 per litre in major cities, with prices higher in less accessible locations, and called for wage awards and naira-denominated crude oil sales to local refineries as immediate relief measures.

Fuel marketers warned prices could climb to N2,000 per litre if global crude oil prices continue rising, while stakeholders urged the government to check Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s growing market dominance.

In Kano, tricycle operators have already raised fares by 50 per cent in response to the price surge.
