Power outage hits Lagos, Oyo, Osun as grid trips off
Nigeria’s national electricity grid has collapsed, in what is believed to be the first such incident since Joseph Tegbe became Minister of Power, Business Post reports.
Residents in Lagos, Oyo, Osun and other parts of the country experienced a power trip-off around 12 noon on Monday.
Tegbe, who took office in May 2026, had promised to make such disruptions a thing of the past. He succeeded Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down in April 2026 to pursue elective office in Oyo State.
The collapse follows a report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) that the grid recorded no disturbance between April and June 2026.
On September 30, the federal government began construction of a new National Control Centre for the Nigerian Independent System Operator in Osogbo, Osun State. The existing 64-year-old facility has been described as outdated and inadequate.
Grid collapses have repeatedly disrupted homes, businesses, industries and healthcare delivery over the years.
