Reps urge FG to declare national emergency on job creation, revive key sectors

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to declare a “National Youth Jobs Emergency” and prioritise sectors capable of creating employment for young Nigerians.

According to The Nation, the House adopted the resolution on Tuesday following a motion sponsored by Edo lawmaker Billy Osawaru.

Lawmakers called for the revival of textile industries in Kaduna and other areas, alongside measures to strengthen agriculture, manufacturing and solid minerals.

The House also proposed banning used-clothing imports and promoting Made-in-Nigeria clothing and uniforms for schools, security agencies and NYSC.

It sought funding for modern storage facilities and agro-processing clusters across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones within 12 to 24 months.

Osawaru said unemployment had contributed to insecurity and youth restiveness, while several sectors with significant employment potential were underperforming.

Lawmakers also proposed a “Manufacturing Revival Fund” offering low-interest financing to SMEs linked to local sourcing and youth employment targets, alongside reforms to formalise artisanal mining operations nationwide.
