Rivers: Outrage over forced virginity test on female students
The Rivers State Government has launched an investigation into allegations that a traditional ruler subjected female students to forced virginity testing at Government Comprehensive High School, Taabaa, Khana Local Government Area.
According to Daily Trust, school authorities petitioned the Ministry of Education, accusing monarch Mene M.S.K. Nule of intimidating teachers, invading school premises and interfering with students’ rights.
The monarch denied conducting physical examinations but admitted organising annual virginity roll calls since 2020.
He said the exercise aimed to discourage early sexual activity and protect students from alleged molestation.
Nule disclosed that four students received ₦20,000 each in 2025 for identifying themselves as virgins.
Rights group YEAC-Nigeria condemned the alleged practice and demanded an independent investigation.
The state’s Ministry of Education confirmed that investigations had commenced, warning against degrading practices targeting children.
Permanent Secretary Mina Tele Ikuru assured residents that appropriate action would follow if wrongdoing was established.
The ministry also directed schools to strengthen safeguards against coercion.
