Russia threat: Poland urges citizens to prepare emergency backpacks

Poland has urged citizens to prepare emergency “evacuation backpacks” amid heightened concerns over Russia following a Russian military helicopter’s incursion into Polish airspace.

According to Metro, a Russian Mi-8 helicopter flew about 1,000 feet into Polish territory near Braniewo after crossing from Russia’s heavily militarised Kaliningrad region. The aircraft remained in Polish airspace for about 42 seconds, prompting NATO fighter jets to scramble.

Polish authorities described the incident as a possible test of the country’s air-defence readiness. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said he had prepared his own emergency supplies and urged citizens to take official preparedness guidance seriously.

Sikorski said he had food supplies, a hand pump, safety instructions and knowledge of the nearest shelter. He also encouraged people to understand basic first aid.

The Polish Armed Forces said radar systems tracked the helicopter and that fighter jets were deployed while ground forces remained on alert.

The warning comes amid broader European efforts to improve civilian preparedness for potential military or other emergencies.
