Sam Altman: Trump, Xi could win Nobel Peace Prize with US-China AI deal
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping would deserve the Nobel Peace Prize if they struck a deal on artificial intelligence development. According to Fortune, Altman told the outlet’s editor-in-chief, Alyson Shontell, that the two leaders could achieve “a wonderful accomplishment” by agreeing on shared standards and testing protocols for AI, even without banning recursive self-improvement outright.
Altman said such a pact need not be complex, potentially fitting on a single page, provided it includes guardrails against loss of AI control while preventing either nation from gaining a safety disadvantage. His comments come amid rising alarm in the AI industry, following a researcher’s resignation from Anthropic over safety concerns and warnings from Paul Tudor Jones about AI’s growing geopolitical risks.
