Scientists discover “secret” mountains 100 times taller than Everest

Scientists have discovered two hidden mountains buried deep within the Earth that dwarf Mount Everest, standing roughly 620 miles (1,000km) tall — around 100 times taller than the world’s best-known peak.

According to an indy100 report, the structures sit about 1,200 miles below the surface at the core-mantle boundary and were first detected in 1996 through unusual earthquake activity beneath the Pacific Ocean.

Researchers from Utrecht University, led by Dr Arwen Deuss, estimate the formations are at least half a billion years old, though their exact origin and composition remain unknown.

Unlike Everest, these mountains are inaccessible and cannot be climbed.
