Senate, Reps to investigate Air Force aircraft maintenance after deadly crash
The Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives have resolved to investigate aircraft maintenance and safety standards following the Nigerian Air Force plane crash in Ondo State that claimed 25 lives.
According to Channels Television, the Senate adopted a motion sponsored by Senator Osita Ngwu, chairman of its Committee on Air Force, during Tuesday’s plenary.
The ATR-42 aircraft, registration NGR 931, crashed near Igbokoda on October 5 while travelling from Benin City to Lagos.
Lawmakers expressed concerns about recurring military aviation accidents, ageing aircraft and inadequate maintenance.
The Senate directed its Air Force and Aviation committees to inspect the crash site and audit aircraft serviceability across military and presidential fleets.
It also urged the Nigerian Air Force and Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau to investigate the crash and publish their findings.
The House adopted a similar resolution following a motion by Kabiru Rurum, calling for improved maintenance funding and comprehensive aircraft safety assessments nationwide.
