She spoke about her husband’s ICE custody death. Now she could face deportation…
A Maryland woman who spoke publicly about her husband’s death in ICE custody has been placed in deportation proceedings, according to documents shared with The Washington Post.
Veronica Ramirez drew media attention this month after her husband, Julian Curo Churata, died at an immigration detention centre in Louisiana on Sept. 29.
Curo Churata was originally from Peru. He had lived in the United States for more than a decade before immigration officers detained him in June.
The deportation case against Ramirez comes about a month after his death.
Ramirez lives in Laurel, Maryland. She said that if she is deported, the couple’s daughter will be left with no parents.
“I am all she has left,” she said.
