Southgate questions FIFA over Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2026 World Cup suspension

Former England manager Gareth Southgate has questioned FIFA’s decision to partially suspend Cristiano Ronaldo’s ban, suggesting the Portugal captain may have received preferential treatment ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

According to World Soccer Talk, Ronaldo was initially handed a three-match suspension after being sent off for violent conduct during Portugal’s World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland in November 2025.

However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee imposed a one-match suspension and deferred the remaining two matches for a one-year probationary period, allowing the forward to feature in Portugal’s opening World Cup fixtures.

Speaking on The Amol Rajan Connection, Southgate questioned the decision and stressed the importance of independent disciplinary procedures. “Well, you’re interfering with the refereeing of the game. So, you know, there is a referee, then there is a disciplinary panel, and that should be it,” Southgate said.

He added: “Had he not been Cristiano Ronaldo — and I think he’s a wonderful player, by the way — I don’t think that would have happened.” Although FIFA’s regulations permit suspended sanctions, Southgate’s comments have reignited debate over consistency and fairness in football disciplinary decisions.
