Super Falcons target Olympic Gold after WAFCON and World Cup setbacks – Eguavoen
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have set their sights on winning women’s football gold at the 2028 Olympic Games following their disappointing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign and failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. According to ESPN, interim coach Augustine Eguavoen disclosed the team’s ambition after Nigeria defeated Comoros 7-0 on aggregate in Olympic qualifying.
“The first meeting we had, we collectively agreed that we put the WAFCON disappointment they had behind and set our eyes on a gold medal at the Olympics,” Eguavoen said. He acknowledged the challenge, adding: “It is easier said than done.” Nigeria, record 10-time African champions, have never won an Olympic football medal, with their best performance coming in 2004 when they reached the quarter-finals.
Eguavoen also revealed plans to expand the player pool to approximately 50 footballers to increase competition for places and strengthen squad depth. “We want to have a pool of players, about 50, all in different positions, then it is easier for a coach to pick his best players,” he said. Nigeria will next face Morocco in the Olympic qualifying campaign.
